Hello I have a 1980 kz550 and I need to get a new ic ignitor for it. I found one for a kz650 of the same year, would this work or do I need that exact one for a kz550?

The Kawasaki parts fishe suggests the the same part number ignitor is used on 550/650/750 models, the only 650 listed is the CSR model though. This could simply be due to harness length though, it's hard to say.

According to the diagrams, the earlier 650s had points ignition, so the 650-CSR would be the only US KZ650 models with that igniter. :)

The documentation I have found does not show an IC Igniter type ignition for the 1980 KZ650 models; it only shows points systems. However, the documentation does show an IC Igniter type ignition for the 1981 KZ650-H1. That model is the first year of the KZ650-CSR, and as martin_csr pointed out it has the IC Igniter ignition system.

The documentation also shows that the 1980 KZ550-A1 used points ignition, not the IC Igniter type ignition (see link below). The IC Igniter first appears on the 1981 KZ550-A2. The igniter for the 1981 KZ550-A2 has a different part number (21119-1040) than the one for the 1981 KZ650-H1 (21119-1050).

I suggest you verify the exact model year and the exact model of your KZ550 before you buy anything. Ed

The 1980 Kz550A1 had points, but the 1980 C1 model had the igniter.
www.kawasaki.com/Parts/PartsDiagrams/1980/KZ550-C1

Speculation, but I think it was because the 80 550A1 was designed based off of the 79 500 which had points. The 80 C1 Ltd was a redesign so they went with the new ignition. Or maybe they considered the Ltd a premium model.

The 1980 models also had a 1-phase charging system, whereas all other 550 models had a 3-phase charging system.
The 1980 models also had an earlier version of the brake calipers. All of the later 550's had a more modern looking caliper.

Either way, all of the first gen Kz igniters are interchangeable, even with the 1000 models. They all use the same pickups and igniter.

The earliest version looks different on the big-motor models, but they should be interchangeable as well. The earliest version found on the big-motors also had different coils requiring a ballast resistor, but if you use the 2.3 ohm coils from the 550/650/700/750 line you don't need a ballast.

Make sure your coils measure around 2.3 to 2.7 ohms on the primary. Then you know you have electronic ignition coils. The points coils measure closer to 4 ohms.

As long as the igniter looks like the one in the photo it will be a match.

If you can find the right type of GM HEI module, you can make a Kz igniter pretty cheaply.
