Starter started smoking, turns slow.

Now I was going to start the bike, turned over slower than usual, all of of a sudden there was smoke that cam directly from the front of the starter. Could I rebuild kit fix whatever is burning up, or could it be because of my solenoid went bad, or both? Smoke was from starter like I said.

unlikely that the solenoid has anything to do with it. I would pull the starter and bench test it. see if it spins fine with no load. then power it with jumper cables. if it still smokes you have to find out why. could be worn brushed, only part of the anrmature is getting power and causing a high draw. had a electric plow pump do that to me. 3 brushes were touching fine, 4th one the tension spring broke.

Rebuilt the starter. All is well now.
