Intermittant starter issue

Several times in the past month I've tried to start the bike up and I just get a single click sound from the solenoid and no turning of the starter motor.

Both times have been in the rain. I just replaced the starter motor with one that was restored to like new condition back in February... I'm starting to wonder if maybe I have a wiring issue going to the starter. The reason I wonder that is because I don't try to do ANYTHING to get the starter to turn other than just wait a few seconds and try again, and when it turns, it does so with no issues, nice healthy sound. I even took it apart last week and it was clean as a whistle save for the proper amount of grease, and only where the grease should be.

Could be getting water in the starter button switch, or some of that old solder in there may be giving up.

Then why am I hearing the solenoid clicking?

To be fair though, I have been wanting to replace the hand controls for a while... I just haven't because everything seems to work and they're stock.

Maybe it's the relay? When my starter made that "click" sound my brushes were shredded and a simple replacement starter solved it. Since your starter is fine, I'm thinking relay.

Edit: also could be water leaking into the starter? maybe replace your starter cover gasket?

]I occasionally find a dead spider in the start button assembly. If I wiggle the button it'll start. But since you hear a click, you are correct that you should probably look into a new solenoid. Most generic ones should work, and they are cheap.
