81 KZ750 H Brake/Low fuel lights
05 May 2017 14:26 - 05 May 2017 14:27
On my new to me KZ750LTD my warning Brake/Low Fuel light lights when I put on the rear brake. I'm pretty sure this just started. I just wired the front brake light switch and tested it and it worked. About half way through my first test ride I noticed the warning light coming on. Now the brake light does light when I put on the rear brake but no longer with the front brake. The "reserve light module" is still installed and wired but I have no idea how that thing is supposed to work.
I'm going to pull the headlight out of the bucket and just make sure my front brake switch is still wired.
Thoughts?

Don't fix it until it's broken.

The service manual & owner's manual have a description of the stop lamp (brake warning lite). It's supposed to illuminate when you apply either brake. Also, there's a brake light failure switch for in case there's a fault in the circuit. On my 81 650-CSR, the stop lamp is supposed to flash when the switch detects a problem with the brake light, such as a bad bulb. This is a safety feature to decrease the likely-hood of getting rear-ended if the brake light doesn't work.

thank you. So the light coming on with the brake light is normal. I've never had a bike with that feature so I thought I'd ask.

Yes, it's normal. And the brake light failure switch is a handy device, because it lets you know the rear brake light is working. Some KZ models don't have the feature.
ps: I don't know what the reserve lighting device does. my csr doesn't have that & I never looked into it.

Not sure either. Glad to find out that red light on the speedo is not a problem. Usually a red light is something bad.

Reserve light comes on when you are low on gas and you should put the petcock on RESERVE so you have enough gas to get to the next gas station.
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

I found the problem with the front brake switch. One of the connectors came off when I put the headlight back in the first time. It's a tight squeezed getting all of that in there. But the brake/low fuel light now lights when either or both brakes applied
Don't fix it until it's broken.
