Do you have the KZ1000/1100 pdf manual? It has a troubleshooting section with a series of tests & flow charts for the meters.

martin_csr is correct, the manual should help identify the problem. If you do not have the manual for your model take a look starting on page 5-34 at the link below. It might help. Ed

Might be easier to just replace the tach with a used one. There are lots of used bike part dealers on ebay that you might check with to find what you are after, and for a likely unbeatable price. ;)

If not for ebay, my BOTM would look something like this  :

Before buying used (which could be defective), he should do some troubleshooting.
The manual specifically mentions needle fluctuation & what to check.

I do have that .pdf, it's for the non-shafties. I also have the print FSM for the shafties. I looked real quick in the general troubleshooting area of these manuals and didn't think to look at the specific chapter. That will be a good start. I'll go through the TS chart and see if I can figure anything out. Can I use a standard digital multimeter to test for pulses from the coil?

Daveo, I have 1 extra US spec and UK spec tach I'm hoping I'll find one that works. I also have 2 UK spec speedos. All this courtesy of ebay. I don't think there would be anyone on this forum doing anything if it weren't for the ebay parts.

The only issue with putting the other US tach on is the damper issue. The reason this particular tach is on there is the bezel is in just a bit better shape than the other one.

UPDATE: I was just digging around in the box o' instruments and found a good damper. OH YEAH! so if I can't correct the issue with the one tach I'll put on the other and see if it works.

Yes they do. Problem with the KZ1100A is that they share instruments with the ELR so they're harder to find and are more expensive.

That they are. I bought the 2 I found on UK eBay that would ship stateside. The one pictured cost me $165 shipped. It was only the Speedo and it didn't have the silver band holding the bezel on but it sat on a dealer shelf for decades supposedly. Then I bought a complete cluster for $125 shipped for spares.
