3ohm Dyna Coil Question

Hey guys, had the bike up and running great! Did about 20 miles on it no problem. Was out riding yesterday and suddenly lost power. I have the MOTOGadget M-unit on the bike and it was indicating there was a short in the Ign. System. I am thinking one of my coils is shot. Did some tests this morning and not looking too good. The bike has the Dyna ignition plate on it also, but I believe the system is quit old and shows some age. My question is, can I run stock Kawi ignition coils with the dyna ignition plate? When I have the LH coil hooked up, everything seems ok, lights come on, power is good, but when the RH coil is hooked up, nothing, my M-unit comes on but blinks notifying me of a short. No lights, nothing. Also, the bike is cranking VERY VERY slow now. Even hooked up to my car, barley turns over the bike. I tried jumping the solenoid and nothing. The solenoid clicks when the button is pushed, but nothing.

It is a 1981 KZ750 LTD H2. (Thanks again) I am hoping this is the end of it!!!

Will it turn over with the suspected bad coil disconnected?

Hey Steve, Thanks for the response. No, it does not. Even with the plugs out to relieve compression. I am thinking my brand new Shorai battery is done for. Reads 13.2v, but haven't had a chance to check the Amps yet.

Just had battery tested. Good volts but bad amps. Good thing my Shorai battery is under warranty. Now to find out why it went bad
:(. Spoke with Dynatek and a tech member say any coil will work with the Dyna S ignition plate as long as it is 3-5OHM coil.

Thanks Steve, has anyone ever ran the EMGO Dual Pole Coil? Says it is rated as a 4-ohm coil. Read some good and not so good reviews on it.
Thanks

Dyna coils are pretty tough. I'd make sure it's not the coil and get a new one if it is. Mismatched coils isn't a good idea. I've heard good and bad too. I bought used KZ coils knowing how tough they are. I have two extra sets of KZ coils and one CB 750 set. The misfire turned out to be bad connections.

Right on, thank Steve. My situation is full blown shorting of the ign. system. when the RH coil is hooked up per Dyna's instructions my MotoGadget system is going haywire. Also it is confirmed my Shorai battery took a dump.

Hi, I own a z400 1980 4 cylinder. I am currently experiencing the same issue and will be looking into it when we have some daylight and i am not at work. grrrrr. Did you ever rectify this issue? If so what was the culprit in the end.
