Common Elect. Cleaning Needed.
13 Jan 2016 06:24
Over all the years, these old bikes, voltage drop at coils, Wired George Coil Mod, starter won't work etc.!!!!!
Has anyone cleaned the on - off kill switch?? Actually taken it apart?
I started putting some switch blocks back together. I have a few nice switches left. I am sorry I did not take a before picture of this one.
This switch here was all corroded with green oxidation inside.
All that makes contact and transfers all the power to the rest of the bike is 2 small brass contacts 1/8" round.
Then the copper connector that is .019 of an inch thick.
So when cleaning your electrical items, if you do not want to disassemble. At least take it off bar and turn upside down and soak the switch a few times and turn back & forth a few more. Compressed air always helps.
Just a suggestion!

Ignition switch is another one, the grease in them migrates and coats the contacts.

Had trouble with mine when I used it to turn off the motor and it would not go back to on. played with it and finely got it to work and didn't touch it anymore. one day I decided it needs to work so I took it apart and it was pretty corroded. I cleaned it up and put a little dielectric grease in it and it's been working great. It seemed simple enough to do.

I hate kill switches.
A long time ago I had a bike that wouldnt start one morning and finally finally traced the problem to crud and corrosion in the kill switch. I try not to use the kill switch but for anyone who does then its worth keeping clean
