kz305 starter.

Im pretty desperate here. I rebuilt the top end of my engine over the winter and spring and went to start the bike and the starter quit. i diagnosed it to be a bad armature and i really dont want to spend over 400 for a new one.

any one know of a site i can get one for cheaper? or possibly just the armature? i know partzilla has one but like i said its over 400 to get it shipped. i found two on ebay but waited too long and they're no longer for sale.

You can try a web search using the name and part number of your starter to see if you can find a cross reference chart that shows the make an model of all the bikes that used that starter. You may then have a better chance of locating a good used one.

What makes you think it's the armature?
Pics?

believe me ive tried searching for my starter o google and its only used on kz305. i then searched for reman motorcycle starters and found a site. placed an order the emailed to confirm that they had one which they do . itll be here in a week.

i disassembled the starter, tested the armature 180 degrees with an ohmeter. the numbers were everywhere and one spot was shorted.

when i bench test the starter i can only get it to spin in one spot everytime. this is why i condemned the armature.

got the remand starter for about 280 shipped.

Me too. I'm not even sure that the rebuild is a success yet because I havent been able to start it. Plus for some reason I didn't mark any wiring for re assembly and just took a horrible picture. So I'm not sure if the coils are wired correctly.

Also every time I crank the engine by hand I hit a slightly tough spot which Im Not sure if its to do with one of the valves or to do with the pistons.

Guess I'll find out next week.

That could be compression you are feeling. Put up your pics. I've redone armatures myself and there were shops locally that do this too. Sometimes it is a bad solder joint caused by overheating due to worn brushes. It's amazing what you can do when you have to.

i called and talked in person at a few places locally that rebuild alternators and starters and they all said they do not rebuild armatures anymore. i dont have any pictures but i did find one part where the wire looks a little messed up but its in the middle and not near any solder joint. just looks like a lot of work to fix one. how do you get all the glue or what ever it is off the wires?

starter is on its way to me anyways. maybe i'll try to fix mine, sit on it for a few years until parts are even more rare for this bike and sell it for thousands.

Not likely. Eventually I'll have to cough up $300 for a rotor for my Z1. The used ones have lost some of their magnetizem over 40 years.

Hey. When I was looking for a shift rod seal I could only find one on eBay for about 150. Eventually found one for 3 bucks plus like 30 shipping from a site with the help of kzrider.

I messaged the guy on eBay asking how he sleeps at night selling something the size of a dime for that much.

Sharks. Find it elsewhere. One guy has a silver dollor next to his parts. I told him I warn everyone about his adds. He said "too bad, you're missing out on some good parts." There's a speedo on there for $175 used. He out bid me and others and now has it listed for two years. F him. He can fondle it till the cows come home. I can buy a new one for $175 from z1partsinc. B)
