Speedo

So I have a 82 xj1000J and when I bought it it didn't have a speedo on it just a tach. Well I was going to go ahead and get me a speedo but everywhere I look teels me it is cable driven but coming from my drive is 3 wires not a cable. What gives? Did the p/o switch the cable out for a electric unit? Im lost and don't want to buy one until I figure out what I need. I figured since there is this vast amount of knowledge on here I'd ask you fine gents..

Have you tried the XJ forum? Not trying to be a jerk or run you off. Just seems like you may get a better answer there.

Here are a few pics. Could it be a drive from a 81?

So no one has a clue what this is from or what kind of gauge will work for it?

J models came with electronic instruments, both speedometer and tachometer.

The speedometer cable is part no. 54001-1014.
Googling 54001-1014 produces a variety of sources, including Z1 Enterprises:

www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?i...f1100&item=MP03-0068

Would expect details to be covered in the Factory Service Manual.

I believe there's a bike magazine J model test article in the FILEBASE that describes the magnetic speedometer pick-up on the front wheel. (See the following post.)

Am thinking the J model's speedometer "cable" is actually wiring from the magnetic pick-up to the speedometer. And that the posted picture of the wires and connector may be a part of such wiring.

But when I go to order a new one for the bike it says is it cable driven. Thats what I don't understand. Any bike I've ever had was cable driven so I'm new to this whole electric drive thing. Would any electric driven gauge work then. They are expensive so I really dont want to take a chance and it not work.

Could give Z1E a call to confirm fitment for the model at hand.
