So i will try to keep this novel short while still answering questions, because fixing things over forum isnt the easiest.

my bike ran fine, every so often when i hit my left blinker the ignition fuse would blow, my solution was to start signaling by hand. Present day......took off my headlight for because my starter had been off and on so i had just been kick starting it. i figured it was the relay but i took the headlight off just to double check all my connections. while doing so the running light wire pulled right out of the headlight so i saulderd it back in....moments later all back together, got about 2 blocks from my house and pop! bikes dead, pushed it back to garage, replaced the fuse still wont start.

So i decided,34 yr old wiring, time for a revamp.....bad choice.

i have everything completley simplified, pretty much identical to this kzrider.com/forum/4-electrical/503437-si...y-1978-kz1000-bobber
ive tried with the ignition, with justa kick start, i even completley bypassed my ignition for just a switched power source.

heres the only thing i can see thats going wrong, i have a dyna set up. everythings has power as long as the red wire isnt hooked up from my magnet. green wire good black wire good. soon as the red goes into the red yellow. my test light says no more juice.

i know ive spent too much time and need to step away to see the answer but im obsessed.

sorry this is so long and has such poor punctions, grammer, and structure. i feel like my brain is in melt down mode.

thanks in advance for any help

Two things to do:

1. Find "Loudhvx" and have him make a simpified wiring diagram for you.

2. Look in the "Filebase"(upper right hand corner of the websites home page, above the green letters for private messages) It should have a wiring diagram for your bike.

Mpls ugly, search for a thread, Bare Bones for Mattylight, by loudhvx.
In it you will find lots of bare bones wire diagrams for specific models. You are bound to find your year and model (or very close).
Double check the ground at the engine. I was having electrical isseus and found a dirty/loose connection.

Good Luck,

Hmmm, possibly both pickups are shorted (ground potential) thus both coils firing simultaneously equating to excessive current draws when +12Vdc is connected....

First insure engine case at same potential as battery ground (ideally grounded case).

Insure you have the Dyna/Coils wired correctly.

"red wire isnt hooked up from my magnet."... Not sure what this means "from Magnet"...?

rainman, i found that thread originally and based my wiring off those exact diagrams,i also have gone over all my grounds to be extra sure. shoul i make a ground loop?...i .e. battery to engine, engine to frame, frame to battery.

old man rock, i am positive my dyna is hooked up correctley, i used that exact diagram you posted above. As per my red wire comment, my dyna s has 4 wires comming out of it just like in the picture. a black one a white one and two red ones which join into 1 wire. after wiring my bike and checking for power evrything is fine until i wire in the red wire to the red/yellow on my coils, then my test light goes really dim, like turn the lights off to see it dim.

really appreciate the help so far fellas please keep it comming.

2 quick questions.

1. a 78 kz1000 wiring diagram both in my manual and loudhvx's version everything matches up perfect as far as color coding goes. until i get to my ignition /kill switch. what i have comming out of there is 4 wires,1 black wire, 1red/yel wire and 2 red wires which join into one. now the only diagram i can find which matches that description is off an 80. think maybe my throtle and control were swapped out at some point? either way its bypassed completley now so i suppose its a non related issue.

2. in the above diagram posted by old man rock for the dyna s system. where the red splices into the red/yel it says with an exclamation " switched ater ignition switch" is it suggesting that AFTER i turn the key to on i have a seperate switch to power on my coils? im a little lost on that one.

thanks and thanks some more

please let me know if you want me to take some pictures if that helps.

The "switched after your ignition switch" is referring to your KILL (or RUN/STOP) switch which is definitely a separate switch that you turn on to power your coils (and the DYNA S in this case).

Are you referring to the 1980 D model?
Are your ignition switch and kill switch separate?

have you tried to run it in a total loss condition?
nothing but battery power no alternater
I ll dig up a diagram and try and post it
the wires that come from the alternater and are routed under the output shaft cover are a very common problem area.
check for rotten wires grounding out or shorting out

Let's stomp all over this!
Based on what you've written, I'm guessing you have the kill switch and starter button (the right handlebar control) so, here goes:
You rewired the bike per the barebones diagram but you still have some of the original wiring so let's see.
First, the stock setup for the control you have:

Now, that one with a Dyna S:

Now, the barebones modified to show the Dyna S (I'm guessing this is how it's sorta actually wired):

Now, the barebones with a kill switch included to show how using the kill switch should look:
