Timing light?

I am thinking about picking up a timing light, and found a reference in the archives to make sure it is the "inductive pickup" type. Could someone elaborate? Thanks.

Those are both about the same except for the "advance" knob. That let's you measure the amount of advance. The readings will be off because the light will assume the engine has a distributor. But you don't really need the advance knob for KZ's anyway since the advance marks are on the advancer itself.

...if it was my post, here's an explanation...

I'm certain that nobody believes me to this day, but I somehow managed to buy a non-inductive timing light at AutoZone. Instead of the normal inductive clamp (that clamps on the spark plug wire), it had a good ol' alligator clip with green rubber on it (of course, it also had the +/- connectors for the battery).

Anyway, I tried it, it didn't work (obviously), and I returned it and got an explanation from the counter-guy that the one I had was for old cars. What do I know, I'm no mechanic...

Once I got the correct one, I posted my experience (now in the archive), and probably just caused a bunch of unecessary confusion.... But I can't go back and change it now in the archive...

As said, The Inductive pickup is a lage "clamp" that just clamps on the plug wire. The older type lights used a spring type device that you attached to the top of the plug then you attached the other end into to plug cap.

Get the inductive type. Make SURE it has a BRIGHT XENON? light. FWIW, I got a slick looking Equus light, $39 from Autozone.

I drove disability taxi to get through school. I always went to the crappy tire gas bar and it didn't take very long to get a good wad. I would wait until a sale was on for the object of desire, then hammer down the CT bills. Sometimes I didn't have to pay a cent out of pocket. CT seems to be changing though. When I was a kid it had more of a hardware store/auto repair orientation. Now it seems to be leaning towards yuppy toys and patio furniture. Nowadys you can't even access half the tools (under glass/lock and key)and then they "assist" you by carrying the part for you right to the till. I find it insulting that the insinuation is that I'm going to steal the damn part. The old grey mare ain't what she used to be.

Know what you mean. The CT closest to me never seems to have what I want 'till I get it elsewhere. I just received an 3/8 dr impact and a torque wrench that I had ordered here: Boss Tool Supply . Ordered on Sunday night at work, was at my door on Tuesday morning. How much faster can you get?
