77 kz650 turn signal problem
22 Apr 2010 21:21
Hey guys. I had to replace one of my turn signals today and something odd is going on. On the signal I replaced, the turning light always stays lit, and there is no running light. When I turn on the signal, the light goes completed off and on, unlike my other front signal that just alternates between the running light and the brighter turning light. I have a feeling it's somewhere in my wiring, because when I tested other signals on the same plugs they did the same thing. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Are you sure you installed a dual filament bulb type signal? There should be two hot wires, the 8W filament is the running light and the 18W filament is the turn signal. If it is a single filament type, it goes on the rear.

For the front turn signal/running light a #1157 dual filiment bulb is needed.
On the rear signals, #1156 single filiment bulbs are used.
#1157 is also used in the brake/tail light circuit.

Yep, the new bulb is dual filament and I tried the bulb from the other front signal and it does the same thing. I have a feeling it may be in the wiring or the maybe the flasher relay?

I'd suggest checking the wiring and replacing the flasher can. They fail after a few years.

I too had this problem a few years ago. As I remember it ..
I had some small amounts of rust/corrosion inside the bulb socket.
Use fine sandpaper INSIDE the socket and wiggle the bulb a bit until it gets good contact and works as it should.
Again, As I remember it that is what I did to fix my problem.
Could be wrong, could be right
Regards, Pat

If the flasher works on the one side but not on the new signal there is nothing wrong with it. He just flipped the wires around. The black wire with the white or yellow stripe is the common negative the bright color wire (what ever color it might be usually blue or red) is the flasher. The neutral solid color wire (gray, green, or solid black) is the running light.
