Acewell Speedo/Tach/Gauge Installation?
22 Sep 2009 06:35 - 22 Sep 2009 06:35
Has anyone here installed an Acewell on their bike? I am thinking of swapping out for one as mine gauges are pretty old and ugly. If so, how was it to install? I couldn't find anything about them in the forum, so I thought I would ask everyone.
Thanks
Thanks
Andrew

+1, I'd be interested to hear about peoples experiences installing the acewell gauges. I'm thinking of one for my kz1000.....

i just put one on a yamaha seca 750, used the magnetic speedo pickup
it's just the 3200 plane jane model so hooking it up was pretty simple
only problem was the tach jumping all over, i used the original tach wire and put a 1 meg ohm resistor in the wire and all is well
the back light is blue, nice if it goes with your bike
the temp sensor got threaded into a aluminum block that got jb welded to the cam chain tunnel, runs about 180/190
on the 4 lane and goes to 250/270 when it's just shut down

It's a piece of cake....
Since my OEM speedo Tach was shot.... I cut out the speedo tach harness with ~ 8" to the main harness connector...
Spliced and soldered the indicators from the speedo to the harness conductors appropriately. This way, just plug any play....
For the tach pick up, you have two options...
1) SUCKS ASS... Not accurate.... They provide a small conductor to wrap around one of the coil wires.... Piss poor pick up and inaccuracies in comparison with a DVM tahometer...
2) Direct solder into primary of coil 1/4...
In either case, you have a number of simple programming capabilities for the correct number of cyclinders that can be displayed...
For the speedo, you will receive 2 different size rotor bolts with magnets embedded in them.... Pending your rotor, you can drill and tap a hole for the magnet bolt or ion my case, just used a large washer since I have ZX 636 EBC rotors... See images....
For the pickup, you'll need to fab up a bracket... The pickup is required to be no more than 1/8" from the magnet during rotations.
Programming is simple, measure the circumference of your tires in cm and program in...
Once all completed, compared to another vehicle side by side, 1.2 mph difference! Obviously I could tweak the programming to match but hey, 1mph difference, good enough!

What about using the speedo drive on the front tire? I know they make an cable to fit it.

it's a electronic speedo so somewhere along the line the cable has to turn into a wire
i thought about putting the wire in a length of vacuum hose
just so it didn't look like a wire
the magnet can go on the rim with some mounting tape and the pickup under the fender if you don't want to drill the rotor

Yeah I know but Acewell makes a hookup specifically from the stock speedo box on the axle to the gauge. I believe it converts the signal in the line. Has anyone used this?
