will a wire harness off a 81 kz550D work on my 81 kz550c

Some parts will, some parts won't. The wire length is probably shorter in some areas. If it's not a new harness, it's probably not worth the money and effort since all old harnesses tend to have the same problems in the same areas. You may only be trading one set of problems for another.

I've taken apart probably a dozen KZ harnesses down to the last wire and they all tend to have frayed/broken wires in the same areas.

Most notably in the frame-to-headlight area, the battery/fusebox area and various pinch/rubbing areas.

If you just concentrate in those areas, replacing/splicing wires, you'll probably come out ahead.

there is a huge bunch of wires right behind the headlight is cut right off

I looked at the diaghrams for both, they look very different as far as the connectors.

chances are.. NO.. I have an 82 kz550a3, bought a c model harness, not even close.
