New hand controls
27 Jul 2009 10:04
One of my kz projects needs a complete wiring harness which I can handle the necessary circuits but my question pertains to hand controls. I opened them up and they are pretty corroded and have dirt dauber nests in both of them but they do partially work.
Anyone tried to use a different set of hand controls from any other bike to use on there KZ, looking for something newer that would be easier to find than a set of metal controls. Main concern is the hookup of the accelerator cable or is this more of a universal thing?

You could repair them...
One other option is the Zephyr controls are very close to the late model KZ controls.
Example is my current setup. Zephyr left side for headlamp and signals. Gpz throttle assembly for the right.
Just switched from dual cable (RS) to single cable (BS) throttle.
I had to completely disassemble and restore the Gpz control for the single cable requirement. The switches were not that bad. Spraying lube in it just mucked up the contact. I did have to re solder new wires to the safety switch (one popped off while I was messing with it). And the safety switch needed to be cleaned out. Tore it down to base components and brushed the contacts clean of corrosion.
No issues thus far. If you can, take your time an clean them out. Just make sure not to get oil and such on the contacts so your sure not to create any resistance.

I have R1 right-hand switch gear and K&S Left-hand switch gear on my 1000. I'll have ZX636 left-hand and ZX12R right-hand switchgear on my 900. It's all a matter of splicing the correct wires and you should be able to retain all your factory functions.

so the ZX12R right switch worked with your existing throttle cable or did you have to crimp one up?

Some, like my little swap let me use the Gpz throttle with the Zephyr wiring harness, no changes. Connectors mapped out pin for pin. You may get lucky as well at the yard finding donor switch parts for your existing setup.
Good luck.
Good luck.
