HELP ! Grounded Points
29 Jun 2009 21:32
While installing new points, I'm doing the static timing and notice I have ground with points (1&4) open or closed. I narrowed it down to black harness wire. I can disconnect in harness where it goes to coil, pull neg. wire off either coil, or turn ignition ON, and it clears ground. What in the world could cause this ? Any help would be appreciated !

It's been years since I've swapped out my points ignition, but there are isolating washers in there,I believe, where the wires connect onto the points plate...any chance of that being an issue,in your case?

No. That was the first thing I thought. Black wire is grounded while disconnected from points. The strange part is, I just set the old points last week with no problems. Is it such a thing as grounded coil ? I pull the black wire from 2&3 coil and the ground on 1&4 clears.?? Sounds like something switched around in wiring.

Well, since no one seems to know that question, I'll try another. Should the black wire from 1&4 points be connected to the 1&4 coils ? Since I can't figure out which side is (+) and which is (-) in the schematics, does it matter which side the wires from the points go on the coil ?

Of course the points are grounded they attatched to the points plate that is grounded. If you are using a test light IT should be grounded then when your points open they should show fire. Does that make any since?

When the points are open, I should not see ground. I am trying to set the static timing. The ground I'm seeing with meter is with wire OFF points plate.

The points are grounded by the nature of how they are attatched. I set my points with a test light. If you ground the test light when the points open, it should show voltage. I have never used a meter to set points, to many leads to try to get right, a test light frees up the hands to do adjustments.

I'm going by test procedure in manual. This is just trying to get timing close to 'F' mark before I use timing light. The points are grounded open and closed. The way I see it, they will not fire when grounded. Points on 2&3 are fine - no resistance when open and grounded when closed.

There are little phenolic washers where the wires hook to the points. Make sure they are in place. Look at the 2-3 points and make sure the wires are isolated just like 2-3.

That is definitely not the problem. The black wire going to the coil is disconnected from the points and is grounded.
