starter solenoid???????
16 Jun 2009 15:47
Well I tried to do the WG coil mod and somehow blew the 10 amp fuse in my set up that goes to the solenoid. I replaced it but now my electric start is not working. I used a screwdriver and was able to jump it and turn the starter. For whatever reason I can not get it to fire now. Took the coil mod off and still cant get it to fire. ONly other thing I did was put the green dynas on it with new plug wires. ?????? All other fuses are fine. Could I have somehow damaged the starter solenoid and my dyna elec ignition? The bike is a 78' K1000
Thanks in advance for all of your input.

Open up the right handle bar switch pod and see if the start button contacts are burned. Check the wiring from it to the starter solenoid as it is a straight shot except for some connectors. This circuit is what energizes the coil in the starter solenoid pulling in the contacts, turning the starter motor.

It looks like they are burned. Is this a simple fix?
Or will I need a hole new control?
Thanks for your input

If you can clean up the contacts with some fine sandpaper(400-600 grit) and then use a good contact spray cleaner(Not WD-40!!) They might be salvageable, if not try z1 enterprises, or americam classix for new switches.
Sounds like some wires got crossed and shorted out the start button.

I tried cleaning the contacts but no luck.
Before I go looking for a switch is there anything else it can be? I can't think of anything. All else is fine.
Is it possible I damaged my elec ignition?

The elec ignition should have nothing to do with activating the starter, but it's possible to burn a set of contacts in the ignition switch if the current that smoked the fuse went through the switch.I tried cleaning the contacts but no luck.

Thanks for the input fellas.
A buddy had an extra control, so we swapped the switch and that fixed it and I got to keep the switch for no charge.
So big thanks to all.
