Stator swap
13 Jun 2009 14:09
Hi gang anybody no if I can swap out my 2 wire stator on a 78 650 for a 3 wire stator off of a 750? I know I will have to get different regulator to handle the 3 phase.

I'd look at the filebase here, and I think some one posted how to do it at

Electrically, it can work. If your 2-wire stator has 12 "spokes", and the 750 stator has 18 "spokes", the rotor probably has the right number of poles.
The real question is physical mounting and fit. Obviously you don't want the stator scraping the rotor, and you want the alignment to be the same as with the old stator.

Yes I'm hopeful that it will fit if not I'm trying to get a rotor to match the newer stator. should be relatively easy to wire up.

OK, have to ask the dumb ass question of the day...
Why not just get a Dyno/stator designed for the KZ650?
Meaning you have to take a chance on the wiring frying other components, work maybe,/maybe not, swap rectifier/regulators do all this work for what... the price of brand new ~ $120 stator...
I don't get it.... :S

No problem this bike hasn't charged right for many years I have replaced the battery regulator stator and rotor several times same exact condition. So I am going to upgrade the charging system to a bigger and hopefully better one. The stock 2 wire stator is kinda weak anyway. I have read that other bikes out there charge just fine my bike is the exception to the rule.
