Bad ground on KZ550

I have a 1981 KZ550, I have been having weird electrical problems recently. Every so often when I go to start the bike I will get a solenoid click from the starter rather than it turning over. This seems to be remedied by grounding the negative battery terminal against the frame.

My question is where is the ground located on this bike, I've looked but, I'm having trouble tracing the wires.

At the end of the top frame tube under the tank.

If it was me,I'd get some 6 gauge welding cable, some correct sized terminal lugs and electrically tie the negative battery post to a engine mounting bolt.

This makes for a sturdy, high current ground.

On a KZ550 the main ground is located just behind the rear brake light switch on the RH side of the bike. It screws into the engine cases just below where the upper rear motor mount is located. Just follow the negative cable coming off your battery and you'll find it.

Hmm, mine's a UK model so may be different but my ground from the battery is at the rear of the spine just behind the tank locating rubber. God only knoews if that's where it should be if that is the case.
