Blown Headlight Question?

27 Apr 2009 05:59

Two weeks ago The headlight on my bike stopped working. First the low beam then two weeks later the high beam went out. I figured it was just an old lamp. So I changed it with the same Sylvania Headlight. Both High and Low burned out in two weeks. Any suggestions? Everything else is fine including turn signals, brake, and tail light...Russ

Possible regulator failure. Replaced mine years ago with reg/rec combo unit from Z1E and still working fine.

If not already done, could test charging system by measuring voltage across battery terminals at 4000 rpm and look for 14-15 volts. Over 15 volts indicates failed regulator, whereby excessive charging voltage may blow headlight.

Good Luck. :)

About what I figured. The regulator is old and I will replace it either way. I am thinking about a Halogen replacement. Also for those who have replaced a headlight lately. If you buy one at an auto store it will cost $23.00 buy one from Z1 www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=2090 for $5.97...Russ

I'd check the other bulbs too. Instrument, turn signals, and brake lights.

Just a thought, voltage spikes/reg. problems usually take out other bulbs as well. Vibration is also a common killer of H/L bulbs. try checking H/L shell for contact to bits, and deterioration of h/l rubbers. luck g
