These are usually bolted right to the crankcase. I'm not sure about the 78 kz1000, I would love to have one to look for this bolt hole on, but on its baby brother, the kz650, it is on the right side behind the oil filler cap. The wire is run under the engine mount and up to the bolt hole.

If you suspect the grounding cable is faulty(or known as Earth to the Brits.) a replacement can be made for a few $. Remove the cable and visit the local welding supply store and purchase either 8 or 6 gauge welding cable sufficient for your needs.

The welding cable is very flexible and can bend to fit many difficult situations. On wire sizes the smaller the number the larger the conductor.

Then a visit to a local battery shop who can then crimp/solder the correct size terminal lugs on your new cable. Battery cables can fail internally under the insulation on almost any vehicle, but usually on the positive terminal.

All battery terminals must be clean and tight to transmit the high currents needed for starting, and the starter solenoid terminals must also be clean and tight.

A thin coating of vaseline will reduce the chance of corrosion on the battery terminals giving many years of service from the battery.
