1983 KZ1100 Spectre Flywheel Replacement
02 Jan 2009 09:11
I've finally found a replacement flywheel(alternator rotor) thats not going to break the bank. The original stator clipped the magnet and sheared part of it off. Bike runs fine, but doesn't charge fully. I've just had to keep it on a charger when its parked until now. Now all I need is some guidance on exactly how to go about replacing it. Is there anyone who could walk me through it? I know I'll need a rotor puller, are there any other specialized tools that will be required? Thanks in advance to any and all who can help.:woohoo:

Just a puller should do it and when you tighten the new one down you will need to think of a way to hold it so you get it tight.
Watch when you take the old one apart if the starter cluths is not on it already there is 3 springs and 3 dowel pins to watch for
if you can find a manual they explane this very well on how to change

S, I did't see a referance to old units failure. something I like to do before replacing stator/rotors is check crank nose for true. luck G

the reason for the original failure was a broken stator bolt mount, the stator came loose and sheared off part of the magnet. i found a replacement alternator cover and other than not charging all the way it runs like a top with no extra vibration or other noises.

Ok... Update. Sourced a flywheel through a salvage yard. Hopefully have the bike back on the road by the weekend.
:UPDATE:
Bike is back on the road charging up the battery just like it should be.
