I am looking to upgrade my points on my 79 650 to electronic, anyone know what bikes I can swap from before I go to the junkyard? I searched thru the archives for about an hour (whew....) maybe I missed it

KZ/GPZ550, late model 650s, and 750/4s should be an easy swap. You will also need the advancer with cam and an Igniter.
I have put a KZ1000 electronic Ign. in mine, but have yet to fire her up. Just waiting a few more weeks for some warmer temps.

Here's a link to my swap in progress: KZ1000 Ign to KZ650

My KZ1000 Ign. cost $30 including an Igniter, so it is worth a try. Easier to sneak by the wife as well.

The stock elec-ignition has a few advantages over the Dyna as well.

1) The stock elec-ignition works with 2.5 ohm coils. Going to a Dyna would require new 3-ohm (or higher) coils on a bike that came stock with elec-ignition.

2) The stock elec-ignition uses less electrical power than the Dyna. It also uses a variable dwell angle which is a little easier on the coils.

3) The Dyna has both coils on most of the time even when the engine is not turning (but the key is on). This is an issue if you want to run without a battery.

4) The dyna S puts all of the electronics right on the engine. Heat and vibration can take its toll on the electronics.

5) If the stock elec-ignition module burns out, you can make a replacement for about $30.

6) Modifying and making stuff is more satisfying than buying stuff. (This is the real reason, probably.)

Hey loudhvx I do like to do things the "hard way", I have converted old chryslers from points to electronic using all junkyard parts before and have found that when things do go wrong ,and they will, I have the knowledge to figure out the problem but I never built a module before. How would I do that?

Here's a couple links:

This one uses GM HEI modules and is very simple.

This one you make from scratch.

I converted a Dodge to electronic ignition. The old "orange" Chrysler module and similar ones seem pretty indestructable, but they are awfully big, otherwise I probably would have used them on the bike.
