TOPIC:

I have an electronic ignition to swap into the bike, and it's a bit dirty. What should I use to clean it up? How and what should I do at the pivot points and what type of grease should I use at these points? Dielectric grease?

One more question. Looking at this thread, from Rob , Lou says to make sure the rubber stops are on the arms. My arms are missing the rubber parts, what should I do about that?

I put a dyna set in mine, dont recall any rubber either, a good blast of carb cleaner, and some light grease worked fine

The rubber stops are on the inner side of the weights and look like a bits of dirt, not really noticable as being rubber. Have a good look, because when I looked at mine I thought they were not there, and even tried to clean off the spots before I knew what they were.

No they are missing. Do they act as a cushion? Do I really need them or should I look around for some arms?

They do act like a cushion. They probably absorb some vibration to give a more stable advance.

Without them, the total advance will increase. This means if you set it at idle (or static), the advance will be too much at high RPM. This will lead to knock and damage to the engine. It's only a few degrees.

You can compensate by retarding the timing, or setting the timing at 3000 rpm (by then, all of the advance should be in) using a strobe. However, the timing will be retarded at idle. The bike's idle may be rougher.

If you then increase the idle to make it smoother, you may start to "bump" into the advance range and the idle will be really touchy... wanting to rev at times then dropping.

Don't you still have the ones from the points advancer?

Yes I still have the points advancer. The bike runs great with them, so I will assume the rubber is still on that set.
Lou, then you are saying I can swap arms? Shouls I swap my springs too?

I *think* you can swap the arms. If so, then swap the springs too.

You may be able to swap the whole advancer if you can swap just the rotor portion.

I would not recommend any harsh cleaners. They eat rubber and the glue that holds the rubber. Just clean the bearing surfaces.

I've often wondered if a small weld blob could make up for the small rubber stop. (ground down to the right size, of course). Maybe it would rattle and bounce too much.

It looks good! For $5 I'd snatch it if I didn't already have a couple spares! These things are only going to get harder to find.

The arms on my advancer have the rubber pads, and the thing dimensionally looks to be a match to the one I bought to swap in, except for the springs. Original springs have 7 coils, and the "electronic" advancer has 9 coil springs...
I'm going to use the advancer on the bike, with the electronic rotor, hook it up and let her rip. We'll see what happens...
