Hi does anyone know if ignition coils off a 81 KZ550 would be the same as the coils used on a 81 KZ750.

Thanks: Brad

They do have different part #s when I look them up here
but that does not mean you cannot swap them. I'm not sure if you can though.

Here are the 2 diagrams with the part #s:

True.
But points coils will have different ohms than the electronic ignition ones. The electronic-ignition-coils will wear points faster than points-coils. If the 750 has electronic ignition, then it's not an issue.

(Some 550's had electronic ignition in 1981.)

Thanks for all your information the diagrams with part numbers are great I have added the link to my favorites.

The coils are actually off a 82 550LTD I plan on putting them on my 81 750 LTD. I assume the 82 550 LTD would have had electronic ignition?

Anyway I thik I will buy them and give them a go.

Cheers: Brad

I would check the primary resistance. They will be either 3 ohms or 1.5 ohms. To check, measure between the two lugs that you hook power and the ignition wire to. The reading should be the same as the coils you are currently using or what the reading should be for your bike.

Points coils will be around 4 ohms, and electronic igition coils will be around 2.5 ohms.
