You are perfectly correct on all counts and I'm busted. I ran across this at 3-4 am and very tired. I saw a quick slide show and noticed that the points seemed to be on the wrong side. That's about it, didn't stop to think after that. Didn't even take a good look at the engine. My bad. I will be more alert and careful in the future. I tried to do a "I didn't inhale", but it didn't work.
