How to replace idiot lights
03 Feb 2008 19:30
My clymer manual doesn't show how to replace the idiot lights on a 77 KZ1000. How do I disassemble the dash to replace the idiot lights? My neutral and high beam lights do not work.
Thanks

I've done it in the past, but I can't remember exactly how it was done. In general terms, remove the instrument cluster, then remove the rear cover. You should see the wires for each light going into a rubber plug. Remove the plug, and at the other end of the plug is the bulb socket. You can then replace the bulb.
If the plug is stubborn about coming out, try to pull it out a little bit and spray some silicon lube around the plug. That should help it slide out.

It's the bulbs inside the tach and speedo that are a royal PITA.

I just replaced the bulbs on my 77 last week, had the exact same bulbs out as you. easiest way was to un-bolt the entire instrument cluster from the top steering crown, un-screw the speedo and tach cables and lift the cluster away from the headlight. This is the easiest way to access the three philip screws the hold on the back cover for the instrument panel. Once the back is off, gently pull out the rubbers housings for the burnt out bulbs and replace them. Reverse for re-assemble. When you bolt the entire cluster back on to the top crown, double check the angle so that you wont be looking at a reflection of the sky in your speedo and tach while you ride,

If it's just those bulbs, simply remove the plastic nut around your ignition switch, remove the cover, replace the bulbs and you're done. 5 minutes at most. If it is the bulbs inside the tach or speedo, remove the philips screw from below, then the 2 8mm head nuts, washers, spacers ect, lift the speedo or tach, replace the bulbs and reassemble. 30 minutes work.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
