Okay, let's start with the basics. Do you have a repair manual (factory, Clymer, Haynes)? There should be a section in there on how to test your coils.
Do you have a multimeter to test the resistance in the coils?
Check the primary leads to your coil to make sure they are connected and not corroded.
Do you have a points ignition? Have you checked the points?
