The taillight in that pic is on Mark Wings '77 KZ650C, and it's from an early 90's ZX6 600 Ninja.
I have the same taillight as in that pic that I'll be installing on my KZ650, and it was from a '92 ZX6 600 Ninja.

nice. he said something about using it for the turn signals as well... i 've seen that a lot, but it's usually on modern LED tai-lights. i like this one because it's not as gaudy as some I've seen... do you think you can do the turn signals with this light as well?

Yes, as long as the light assembly you get has 2 dual filament bulbs you can intergrate the turnsignals. You can either get a "Tail Intergrator" or a trailer wiring box.
I have a Zx12 light on my 1000 and has intergrated turnsignals with the brake and taillights still functional.

Is that tail light mounted upside down? I've looked for a similar one, but all the ones I can find look inverted to that one.

Here is how I mounted the ZX6E tail light, and made a license plate bracket:
The light is held on with two brackets bent into Z shapes, with holes in each end of the Z. One side of the Zs is mounted to the tail's mount, the other end of the Z to the light.
The license plate bracket is a separate piece. A flat piece of aluminum with four holes. Two line up with the rear fender mounts, the other two the size/spacing for the license plate.
I have a spare inner plastic fender put in place of the stock chrome fender. It's cut short and turned around facing backwards:
