Dyna-S worth upgrading over Stock Ignition?
15 Jun 2007 13:44
I have a 1980 Kz750H with 14,000 miles. I have had a lot of problems with the carbs and currently working on those now. When the bike was running there did not seem to be any ignition problems I could discern. I already have 3.0ohm dyna coils which I am going to install... my question is: Is a dyna-s ignition a worthwhile upgrade over the stock kawasaki electronic ignition IF the kawasaki ignition is essentially fully functional? What would I gain from the upgrade?

I would say that the only way the Dyna would be an improvement is if the stock unit isn't holding time. Check it with a timing light and if it looks like the mark is jumping around on either pickup at idle or full advance, you'll probably want to consider replacement.

Dyna is a good improvement over stock but Wiredgeorge's relay for the coils mod helps even more. Replacing the 26 year old coils with new ones doesn't hurt either.

upgrading your coil will give your spark a hotter spark thus allowing you to burn more fuel. This will create a better running bike, better exhaust, and a bit of a HP gain. The better your combustion is the more HP you get. You might see anywhere between 3 to 5 hp gain. But overall your bike will run a lot smother.

The Dyna S will use twice as much power as the stock Kaw electronic. It will drain your charging system if you idle a lot (traffic, stop lights).
