Okay at the risk of looking like an idiot.......

Does anyone have a picture of Dyna Coils mounted on a KZ750/GPZ750 (lets say 1980 - 1984)?

I recently ordered a set of the 3 Ohm Coils from Z1 enterprises (excellent service as always), mounted them up started the bike with gas remaining in the carbs and life was good.

till I tried to put the tank back on anyways. The Dyna coils stick out too much and the tank hits them. The tank is off an 82 GPz (try finding an L3 tank these days )

It seems like the coils would fit fine I could rotate them 90 degrees (so the plug wire terminals were pointing down). Do I need to make a custom mount or am I just being dense?
?

Here's a pic,

I have a KZ700, which is similar to the L3.
I made a few aluminium brackets to mount the coils with the connections pointing down.
You can just see them in the picture.

When I changed my coils, I first bought green 3 ohm coils, they measured 3,6 ohms.
Later I bought grey 2,2 ohm coils which measured 2,8 ohms.

According to the Haynes manual for my Kawasaki (KZ700) the primary resistance of the coils should be between 1,8 and 2,8 ohms. As far as I know the KZ700 uses the same coils as all the old 4 cylinder 750's, including the turbo. (same part no.)
KZ700-A1 (1984)
525 chain conversion; Dyna 2,2 ohm coils; Taylor plugwires; Stainless steel ZR-7 exhaust ; Remus muffler.
Plans: GPZ cams, ported head, 17 inch wheels, EFI....

Paling,
Thanks, Thats what i figured I had to do (make a bracket and mount the coils with the plug wires facing down)

Nice Bike! The exhaust looks very cool. I notice you also have ZR shocks, I have them also.

It always good to see another KZ7xx L model. I thought the 700 were US only.

I have a brochure for the canadain/Euro model here

Theres a bunch of stuff at kz.mbsween.com you might be interested in.

Also I went out and bought the 3 Ohm coils, 2.2 are rumored to cause problems with heat. I have a set of 2.2 (grey) Dyna coils laying around from an old bike I helped someone rebuild. How are you're 2.2s working out?

Thanks Again
Matt

Hi Matt,

I stumbled across your website a few weeks ago, so I already downloaded the pics and the manual! Really great stuff!! Thanks for that!

The ZR-shocks really work great compared to the old shocks, and they're a cheap alternative for aftermarket shocks.

Up until now I didn't have any problems with the 2.2 coils. But the bike was also working great with the 3.0 coils. No real difference. Like I said the measured resistance is much higher than 2.2 ohms, so in my opinion it is safe to use the 2.2 coils.
The brackets I made up are nothing more than a piece of aluminum strip, bent in a 90 degree angle. The brackets are mounted on the original coilbrackets.

You are right about the 700's being US-only, but somewhere in 1987, someone in Holland decided to import a few 700's. I don't know why they chose to import the 700. The normal 750's were also sold in our country.
According to the local bikeselling-sites there are quite a few of them still around!

Off-topic:
If you have the original wiringdiagrams, you should maybe try to save the scan as a .gif file. I think they will be a bit smaller in size compared to the jpg's. And the quality will be better.
The way I understand it jpg is for photo's and gif is better for simple graphics like wiringdiagrams.

Pauling,

Any chance you can get a closer shot of your bracket, maybe with a ruler in the pic? I'm not having much luck with my attempts to fabricate a bracket.

Thanks

Hi matt,

I will try to take a picture tonight, if I remember...:P

I will also take some measurements for you.

Well, here it is....

members.chello.nl/r.gerritsen18/fotoos/coilbracket.jpg

The brackets (4) were made from 15 mm wide aluminum strip (thickness 2 mm).
Total length is about 75 mm. The vertical piece, attached to the original coilbracket, is about 30 mm long, so that leaves about 45 mm for the end where the coils are attached. I made four of them, 2 per coil.

Hope this helps!
