OK on Tuesday morning I stopped across the street to grab a tin of coffee, and went back out to the bike and had nothing....nothing at all.

I narrowed it down to the switch being bad.

Now I had a switch handy off of an 82 KZ1000P, but the steering lock is in a different spot. (Not too worried, I never use it)

The switch plugs right in, but in the ON postion, I have ignition, but no lights. The lights only come on when I have the key in the PARK postion, which drops the lock AND gives me lights, but no ignition.

Is there any wires that can easily be switched around?

Look on <oldbikebarn.com>
Kawasaki Ignition Switch Assembly
Description: complete ignition switch assembly with fork lock and 2 keys. OEM #: 27005-5072 -5073 -5074 -5067 -5103 -5029 -5027 -5035 -5056 -5063 -5064 -5101 -5081 -5038 -5047 -5030 -5014 -5024

Applications: Kawasaki KZ1000 J2-J3 82-83

Otherwise here is my story: My 1982 GPz 750 (KZ750-R1) had Ignition Switch Problems. I was about to buy a replacement, but decided to carefully disassemble and clean the one I had. It cleared everything right up. There was a lot of built up goo in there, and I polished the contacts. It was 2 years ago so I don't remember the exact sequence of disassmbly. It was moderately difficult.

As I recall mine came apart in layers and it was important to get the layers back in proper alignment.

The control panel on the 1000J on this page <kz.mbsween.com/>looks pretty similar to my GPz750. If your steering lock passes at an angle front to back throught your switch it seems that it is identical to the ingition switch off a 82GPz750 or 82LTD 750, which seem to have more plentiful used parts available on the internets.

Unfortunately, mine is 27005-5019, and the actual shape is different from the switch that covers the other 80 bajillion KZ's :(

Before removing the switch, I turned it to the "Park" position, the key locked, and I could hear the nice little tumblers rattling around in there.

I have taken apart my ignition switch and rebuilt it with good results. You'll need to bend some tabs but the halves will come apart (watch out for some springs and ball bearings to go flying). Then clean off the contacts with some emery cloth (don't use any grease on the contacts) and put it back together.

If its the wires that have come off the back you can just solder those back on or find someone who really likes soldering (like me). :)

Well, it seems the tumblers are screwed up, the key wont turn it at all, and taking it apart didn't help.

So now I can ride the bike (without lights) but if i turn it to the park position, I can get lights, but kills the motor.

The common replacement aftermarket switch doesnt physically fit into the same spot (steering lock etc diff spot) but at the moment I really don't have much of a choice.

I did however purchase a car for cheap to drive for now, but after 4 days of cage driving I'm starting to freak without 2 wheels.

If its the steering lock that drops straight down and the neck of the lock is tall and skinny then its the same...

I'd be more than happy to buy it from you if it is..:cheer:
