help with coil mod
01 May 2007 18:29
im on the final step of the coil mod, the part where you attach new power wires to the coils with an "eye connector". my question is, how do you hook this eye onto the coil? the old wire is attached to that little tab, so do you just wad a bunch of solder on there or what?

let me add a little more info here. i may have messed up one point or misunderstood something. ive got the ground to frame and power from the starter relay fine. am i right by thinking that i am replacing the yellow/red wire above the valve cover with a wire going to #86. the connector there goes from the one yellow/red to a split to the coils. i took out the yellow red from that split connector and put in my new trigger wire to #86. is this correct? now is what im not sure what to do from here. do i take one wire from the relay, then up near the coils take two other wires and connect them all forming a Y? then put an eye connector on the ends of the Y. put one eye on the tab (that doesnt have the green wire) of one coil, and the other eye on the other coil (that doesnt have the black wire)? if this is correct, do i just cut the current wire off the tab and just solder the eye with the new wire onto that tab? sorry, this got a little confusing to me!

Matt, if you think my write up is confusing, re-read your question! bwhahahaha
OK, you got the wire to the battery via the solenoid terminal going through a fuse? That powers the relay.
You got the ground; that wire grounds the circuit
You found the dual out connector for the old coil connection to the main harness? You connect a wire to this dual out connector and the trigger IN on the relay.
The 87 lug on the relay is the power out of the circuit. Run a wire up to the front of the bike and connect it to the coils on the lug that DOESN'T CONTAIN the black or green wires. This is the power to the coils. You can certainly cut the old power wires and solder the #87 wire(s) to the old wires if you don't feel like unscrewing the old wire from the lug.
Hope that answered the question...

i think you have answered my question about how to hook the new wires up to the coils. i just didnt want to mess anything up on them and have to buy new ones. so it looks to me like the new trigger wire ends where the new coil power wires begin. is this correct? im not looking at the bike right now but thats what i remember from last night.

oh sorry. im just adding more confusion here! the trigger wire ends at where the old coil power wires began. or maybe those were the ignition wires. now i have a power wire going from the relay all the way up to a post on each coil. sorry guys, im shot...

Man, I had the same issues when I did mine last summer. The good news is that its worth it.
If you would like, PM me with your e-mail address and I can send you a PDF file of the diagram I made in Visio to explain this stuff to myself and to document my work.
Best of success!
