Retarded?
24 Apr 2007 06:38
Anyone here who has put in a Dyna S should understand this. I read the instructions 4-5 times and for static timing they say to hold the advance wide open while rotating engine till test light (hooked to coil) comes on. Did this and bike runs perfect. Question is, doesn't this mean that at idle the timing is retarded and can overheat if idled too long? Was this for easier starting? My bike does start so fast it's scary. Thanks...

It is fine as long as you used the two-line mark as the timing mark, while the advancer is held forward.
If you used the F-mark line, then it will be retarded, but won't rev properly.
