More mounting problems
03 Feb 2007 14:05
I posted earlier about mounting for a KZ650--I looked at the pictures OKC Kent provided and they gave me a good idea as to what goes where, but the problem is that I dont think any of the electrical parts on this bike are stock 650; I think theyre 750 because of the larger engine. I took some pictures to give yall an idea as to what Im dealing with:

Well, that's a KZ750 four igniter anyway.
Chances are the 750 reg/rec was used also.

The 78 650 would have had a single phase reg/rec. In the middle photo I think I see the reg/rec dangling connected with three yellow wires. That would be a 3-phase system from the 750, then. But in the last photo, it looks like the single-phase reg/rec connector going under the battery box. Is there a reg/rec still bolted to the bottom of the battery box? On the 550's they are mounted to the bottom of the battery box, but I don't know the stock location on a 78 650.
That IC igniter looks like an older one. Was the 750 motor from 1980?

I tried to post a picture of the Reg/rec but it wouldnt upload because it was too big (Im surprised the other two did). Its dangling down like you said--what you see under the battery box is the "reserve lighting device" and I dont know where that mounts either. It was hanging down on the opposing side (right side).

Hm, that igniter looks like it could also be from a CSR650. And the reserve lighting device is something Kawi didn't equip the KZ's with until roughly about '82/'83 IIRC, so that might also give an indication as to the year and/or model of the rest of the electronic stuff. Check the back of that igniter, as Kawi sometimes had the part number inscribed into it or on a paper tag there.
With a part number, at least what models it fits can be cross-referenced and verified.

The wires going under the battery look like red, black, yellow, and possibly another yellow. That wouldn't be reserve lighting wires, that would be single-phase reg/rec wiring. The reserve lighting unit doesn't have fins like a reg/rec as far as I know.
