Prob with sparkers
01 Jan 2007 17:10
I tried to start my bike but it either just winds up with the starter or it one spark trying to start it but this one spark is intermittent and doesn't spark in rythm. I am looking at bikebandit to see what I have under the covers and I see this igniter. Is that electronic? Plus I don't have the manual yet, but what is the resistance value across the coils. I can't remember whatelse I typed in the first post that got deleted from me pressing reset because the screen was late on sending out the post

Ok, assuming we are talking about the 81 KZ1000K1, it has an electronic ignition so it does have an ignitor.
From the Factory Service Manual:
Primary resistance 1.8-2.8 ohms
Secondary resistance 10.4-15.6 k ohms
Primary resistance is measured between the two small wires on each coil, the secondary resistance is measured between the two spark plug wires on each coil.
First turn key on and measure voltage at positive wire on coil to make sure you have 12 volts there.
I also suggest unscrewing the spark plug caps from the coil wires and measuring the resistance of the plug caps, I have seen a lot of those go bad.

I suspect that I have the prob somewhere in that area also but I will run the tests as soon as I find some time. The bike ran fairly good earlier that day but tell me, is it normal for the bike to sound almost like a v twin at idle or was that the spark going( I mean it had a thump thump like only 2 cylinders but sort of like a horse galluping noise) I like that noise where I feel like I am on a actual chopper but if thats wrong....huhm

Ok I have 20k ohms across the coils with the plug caps on but 15 with them off. The plug caps are like 4. something ohms each. Is there anything wrong here steell.... anybody?

Sounds like they are resister caps, and 5k ohms is about right for those.
If you got somewhere around 3 ohms on the primary side then your coils are probably good.

where do I measure primary resistance? I measure power to the coil and it was there. The battery was dead at about 10 volts, and the voltage at the coils was 9.36, something like that. I am gonna get new plugs and see if that works, If it don't I am retiring from it all
