1981KZ 1000
28 Dec 2006 05:36
I dropped it an the ingnition cover got broken along with the timing advance plate. I replaced it with the timing advance plate off an 1980 classic fuel injected bike. Now it has no power. I'm wondering if I need an timing advance plate specific for the 81 carb. bike.
Help:S
Yes it has electronic ing. It's an LTD model. The timing advance assembly is free but came off the classic bike I don't have or know where to get one for the LTD bike.

i'm afraid it's time to get your tester out.
sounds like you just need to fine tune the breaker point gap and the contact, opening/closing, if you don't have one, (everybody should have one) u should get a simple continuity tester that beeps. thats a good way to do the adjustment, i think

Did you replace the timing advancer, and if you did does the new one rotate freely?
Are you sure that the new advancer (assuming you replaced it) was lined up correctly on the pin, and that the pin was not bent(I'm assuming that the 1000 does use a pin to locate the advancer)?

With an 81 1000 he should be talking about electronic ignition, not points.i'm afraid it's time to get your tester out.

Part number 92043 is the pin.
The part numbers for the advancers are different between the 80 KZ1000G1 and the 81 KZ1000J1, so I don't know if they will interchange (I don't know what's different).

Hey Steell I need your advice in the same area. I just got my new bike the other day, almost the same model but I think k1. I tried starting it today and it sounds like only one spark plug was sparking or sometimes I wouldn't get any spark. What would be the resistance value from wire to wire on the coils, secondary resistance? I posted a post about this but no one is answering. Please give me some insight. Also where did you get such clear pictures?
