My tale of woe and misery
20 Aug 2011 22:27
OK:>So I had to replace the OE carbs on my '80 750 LTD h a coupple of years ago.I transferred all the internals over to the "new" ones I got off E-bay.Come to find out, they were from an '83 "F" model. They worked allright, but really never had the low end power I needed, untill it warmed up.So this year, after about not riding it for about a month an a half,I went to go take it out.The tank was bone dry.So I go and put about a gallon of 50:1 weedwacker gas in it I had floating around. It wouldn't run at all.Drain the tank and the carbs, put in 2 gallons of fresh gas.Still won't run.It sounded like it was "Fluttering" and would really only run "Good" between 7-9000rpm.Take the carbs appart.I had an extra set of slow jets from the OE carbs, and they were 35's.Got the smallest drill bit(#70) from the toolroom at work, drilled them out, reassembled.Dropped the mains from 142 down to 125.(Got an 810 kit,V&H pipe,Big K&N's.)After torching all the carbon build-up off the plugs,it fired up!!!Ran good, but was obviously WAAAYYY too rich.Off with the carbs, back in go the 35 slow jets.Doesn't run again!!!Test the compression.145-155 across all 4.Check the pick-ups.Left side is bad.WHAT!?!?!It was just running!!!Swap out the pick-ups with a spair set from my 1100.RUNS!!!(P/U lead wires are about 6 inches too short, but that's another story)Order a set of 48 slow jets. Then #2 Piolet screw starts to jam up on removal.NOOO!!!Go to "Made in China"tool outlet store, and buy the $100 tap and die set for the 6x.75 T&D to clean up the threads.Piolet screw won't go back in.NOOO!!! Come to see that the spring has gotten all effed-up down in the hole.Got it out, screw threads right in,thank GOD!!!But it's still way too lean at low sppeds, but at least I got a clue about where to go with this.OMG,it's been a hell of a week.

Oh yeah>I forgot to add that I thought that maybe the advancer wasn't working right,so I checked it,and yup,it was hanging up.Took THAT all appart, cleaned, lubed and re-checked it.It snaps back real nice now,not hanging up about half advanced. So,to re-count:Electrical issues,2.Carb issues at least 3.And this thing was RUNNING before I put it away.Just goes to prove, nothing is as simple as it seems.
