installing carbs with airbox
18 Aug 2011 21:03
is there some trick to installing the cabs with the stock airbox? the PO trashed the stock box leaving only the screens and boots(his idea of an air filter was to tie a bandana around it). I have been running pods, but recently got a stock airbox off of ebay. so far it has proved to be a bitch to get on. is there any tips I am missing? Thanks

Soak the rubber boots in boiling water for a while to soften them up before installing.

I dont think there is a trick per se to getting the box on.Several things I learned taking mine on and off a few times: Be sure the intake manifolds that bolt the carbs to the intake are either new or in good shape. If not replace.Same is true for the rubber boots that connect rear of carbs to airbox. When reassembling, leave everything loose until allparts are mated and in proper position-then tighten everything down.Move airbox as far to the rear of the frame as u can to give urself some wiggle room.I use a little KY jelley on the rubber parts to get them to slip over the carbs. I also use a stiff piece of plastic to run around the inside of the rubber boots after installing to ensure nothing is folded over or kinked.I have found that a six pack also helps as does some Scotch whiskey and a good mastery of Anglo-Saxon 4 letter expletives. Some folks find that sliding the rubber boots that connect the carbs to box inside the box and pulling them out over the carbs after they are installed works, but it didnt for me.Mucho good luck.bj

Roll them back on themselves when installing carbs; then unroll them onto carbs.

Nope, you haven't missed a thing, its a bitch, the roll back trick is about it when using a stock air box. Oh and don't try the roll back with dry/hard boots, not going to work and bad things will probably happen.

Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.
