running lean?
03 Aug 2011 01:14
hey gang, I been reading quiite a few posts, but can't find a definative answer, is popping at idle, and surging at DEceleration a sign of running lean, I son't have the normal mixture screws that everyone else seems to have, mine only turn about 3/ of a turn, they are plastin and right infront of the choke, I turned the one that seems be popping, to ne difference, thanks in advance. Popping on deceleration (throttle closed) is definitely lean.
When my pilots were too rich, it would surge at a steady throttle opening (like holding at 2k RPM in first gear).

Hey Try syncing the carbs. and then check the valve clearance this might be the problem what kind of bike you working on if it has a lean pop the choke could also be the problem. Have you cleaned the carbs. and if so check the carburetor mounting rubber boots with starting fluid around any spots if you hear any change in acceleration you have an air leak hope this helps and as always don't give up.

Is yours the B4 model?
here is a picture of the carb parts. You may still have the #79 plastic cap/ limiter which won't allow for much adjustment. But checking for air leaks and having dirty carb circuits will be issues that must be addressed. If you pop off these caps, then you can remove the mix screws, spray some carb clean into the passage. Might help, but really a through cleaning is more than likely required. As if these caps are still in place, they are most likely Virgins.

Did you do a thorough cleaning of the carbs? The mixture screws are standard the black caps that are on them that limit the amount of adjustment can be just pulled off.

I know my carbs are clean, and instead of a lean condition, I am thinking that I have a plug going bad, also, this thing looses momentum going up hills, its not too bad, like 5mph and maybe 2000rpm's, almostlike a car that has a blocked cat. converter, what you guys think I could do to prevent this, it only really happens at above 60 (4500 rpm)I shift at about 5000 rpm's everytime, should i wind it up a little more? thanks gents Dave

valve adjustment is on the list for winter project, along with finding a painter for the tank and one side cover that I have, as well as fork work and maybe track down another seat, like a king/queen type

Make sure your air filter is good and clean I had the same trouble years ago with loss of power on hills or when triing to speed up quickly

OK, about the air filter, it is pretty clean, but it does have a gasoline oder to it, is this a bad deal, or something that normal? thanks again

Would sniff-test crankcase oil and examine its physical condition, to determine whether oil has been contaminated/diluted with gasoline.
Good Fortune!
