Manual petcock for my 77 KZ650

Z1 used to sell a cheap $13 manual petcock and an adapter plate but they no longer carry it. Anyone know of a different cheap alternative to the pingel? I know its only $80 but the list of things i need is growing and growing so I'm trying to keep my costs down.

You could contact Z1 to see if they will get it for you. I bet what you want is in the PartsUnlimited catalogue. If not Z1, then probably JCWhitney or DennisKirk.

yeah they said they had problems with it...hmmmmmm......

sounds like pingle or someone had em lay off the cheap one.....like the pepsi salesman moving the coke display to the back isles...

wonder how many cheap ones they sold compared to 100 dollar petcocks...

my 2 work fine 15 bucks...:)

Hmmm, so this petcock,

www.jcwhitney.com/bikers-choice-early-st...ilterid=d9997y1977j3

Should work with this adapter plate,

www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1741

And all should be good. I think? Unless I've missed something. Not much info on the petcock though. Don't know if there a reserve option or not.

Not sure about the RES. Maybe you could contact them or check out the Parts Unlimited catalogue - I'm assuming it's in there - maybe it isn't.

One thing you may have to do is to ream out the tank opening a tad to accept the filter screen.

FYI: Z1 sells an aftermarket Suzuki vacuum petcock that is a direct bolt-on. The filter screen is the same shape as the stock Kaw unit, so no tank reaming necessary.

The vacuum petcock will pass fuel without vacuum when set to the pri setting. So it could be used that way, but I would suggest that if you get one go ahead and connect a vacuum hose to it. Either from a port on one of the carbs if your set has one, or from one of the vacuum ports on the carb holders.

That petcock will work with that adapter plate. However, I don't know if the adapter will work with your tank. Does your petcock have a nut that screws onto a large threaded pipe that protrudes from the tank? That would be a 22mm petcock. If that is the case, then that adapter won't work. Just get a 22mm petcock. If your petcock is held down with two bolts, then measure the distance from center to center. If it's 44mm then that adapter will work.

I can't believe that anyone would want to switch from a regular petcock to vacuum. Do some reading on all of the leaking problems that vacuum petcocks have. Usually the vacuum petcock guys are looking for manual replacements.

BTW the Pingle doesn't have any rubber seals to get attacked by that wonderful 10% ethanol fuel we have these days. That stuff leads to a lot of leaking problems.

yep, with the 2 bolts that measure 44mm from center to center. I would like to keep it a manual petcock but as cheap as possible.

 Is the old stock manual petcock available, but deemed beyond repair, and if so, what's wrong with it?

Depending on availability and condition of the old petcock, could fit an inline fuel valve until locating a replacement for the stock 1977 KZ650 manual petcock.

Here's an example:

Click > www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=3290

Although the Z1E listing says "up to 300cc," my guess is that it would likely flow enough fuel except maybe during extended stretches at full boogie.

Have heard that common "lawnmower" style reportedly flows too little fuel.

Vaguely recalling something about possibility of using a snow mobile on-off fuel valve.

Just thoughts.

Good Fortune! :)

The 'cheap' petcocks we used to sell started to have a series of quality issues. These are the same petcocks sold by Emgo, Parts Unlimited, Tucker-Rocky (bike master) and Marshalls.

For many years the quality was acceptable - then we started to receive more and more complaints about them leaking within a few months. The rubber seals were part of the problem. Many of them were poorly molded. Additionally, the surface on the back of the lever wasn't always perfectly smooth - and the casting flash would chew into the rubber and shred it.

After far too many attempts to get the issue resolved, yet another bad batch arrived... all were shipped back.

We've sent out a staggering number of replacement seals, and accepted back too many leaking petcocks to even want to go near them again...

We are working on getting some 3/8" NPT petcocks manufactured exclusively for us. I think we'll see them in the next month. They are much better quality than the cheap ones, and far cheaper than the pingel petcocks.

While I like the pingel petcocks (I run one on my turbo bike), they are far too expensive - and pingel as a company is horrible to deal with at the business level.
