Others have been able to do it with a fuel pump/pressure regulator on the standard round-slide carbs. Not sure how far you can go with this setup, but there was a guy with a 650 that had a turbo on it that did it this way.

(There really isn’t many carbs out there from factory designed for turbo’s…so be quick)
Just a little background so you know where to look…
The turbo generation happened in the early eighties, I believe Honda was first then Yamaha, Suzuki and finally Kawasaki followed suit all in the span of a couple of years 1982-84ish, this coincides with the katana being released, CB1100R the RG500 and RZ500, also Hondas NSR400 and so on….god I loved the Japanese then!:woohoo:
I believe that they ceased to produce them due to being unpopular (don’t quote me though) and high production costs, here’s an example of production run, only 3500 were made each year of the XJ I have, that is only 7000 total in the world (I have 3 complete plus a spare set of carbs so that’s actually 6996 sets of carbs left!
)
Maybe turbos in general were a little ahead of there time on bikes back then to be unpopular…. hands up anyone that would buy one today…. Oh oh oh me me me pleeeease pick me! :woohoo:
An American company released a limited run of Turbo’s on a Z1000 earlier on in the piece 1979-80 I think, with a Mr Turbo set up although it is a Turbo and sold new, I don’t feel it fits this conversation as it was not a production model as such, also being a collectors bike I doubt you will see many stripped for spares….
So for searching purposes I would look for naturally, the GPZ set up (and so is every one on this forum also, which I know is fuel injected and you asked for carbs but it is only info) and then for Yamaha’s 1982-83 XJ-650 LJ/LK Seca turbo models, Suzuki is called an XN85 this is a inline 4 based on I believe the GSX 650 and Hondas is based on the CX500 which is not really suited as I think off memory it was fuel injected and only being of a 2cyl V configuration… might work with 2 sets but don’t quote me….
Sorry info is all I can help with at the moment although there is a conciliation…
As we don’t live in the same country you wont have me as competition when looking for them…
Happy hunting!
(hope you don’t mind, love to show it….this is what they looked like the XJ650 SECA, its been restored yet only has 30000k on it they came out with 95hp, just like a 900-1000 of the day and with only 7psi boost, it can go to 14psi max)
notice where the turbo is, in front of the back wheel...what a stupid place to put it, did the japanese designers even ride these things...

If you want to carb your turbo drawthrough is the way to go! They can be tuned and there ain't no limit. They don't like wild swings in temp though. I've seen excellent results with SU and Mikuni HSRs, Kehins aren't bad but some need modifications that are to complicated for average Joes. Stay away from S&S unless you like on/off switches.

Well I wnated to get the bike up and running first and then later switch to a Megasquirt system. Have any of you guys tried this system. Looks like it would work great. There even a automatic enriching when you first start the bike like the new bikes have. Just seems like it would take a while to program and get running correctly.

Love to give you a quick answer but it’s a little more complicated than simply which one, you can have several sizes for the one application whether you want quick spool up and tops out early (smaller a/r) or a larger turbo, which takes a while to spool up yet, you get better top end boost …
This might help, if you wish to source a turbo second hand for e.g from a jap import, look towards something from a 1.0ltr-1.8ltr this in theory should work as a motorbike sucks more cfm than a normal car due to higher revs so it should even out…. In theory
(Though I could be totally incorrect, as I am not a turbo expert just a motorbike enthusiast! )
I do know this though from a novice point of view, I would recommend starting off with a smaller turbo…. if there is a problem on test runs while your nutting the system out for example (and quick spool up cant hurt…can it), then there’s less likely chance of over boost and we all know what happens then…
You know I wonder if a motorbike motor’s conrod has ever punched out the side of the motor like I have seen with a couple of car motors in my time…could be rather painful considering you sit over the motor…
And whats a good size turbo for a under a 1200cc.

This is correct from the reading I have done. There is a formula you use based on desired boost amount, engine capacity, and rpm which gives you the info you need to look at a compressor map to determine if the turbo will work for your application. Due to higher RPM's, typically a bike will need something that has a higher maximum CFM than a car of similar CI/CC.

Nice, but he seems to want a front-mount...which would also rule out Mr. Turbo, I believe.
