Runs only when on Full Choke...please help

yes that is the fuel screw the pilot is located in the bowl also the main jet and the neeedle jet as well, the pilot jet is the smallest jet and also the smallest passage so it can be plugged very easily the fuel screw is used for fine adjustment of the idle mixture so it won't be the major problem pull the bowls and start by unscrewing all the jets and checking them out for obstructions and blockages by the way the bowls should not be green in side.

OK, so today I cleaned and rebuliT, the carbs with the kit I got from Z1, man was that necessary, pretty much everything that came into contact with gasoline needed to be replaced or cleaned (and it had both kinds of gum....white and rusty...lol). After rebuilding the carbs the bike would idle nicely, but if you drop it into gear and try to take off it feels like there is no power. I rechecked the timing and it was off a little but when I try to retard or advance even a small amount the bike dosent want to start or run. Tomorrow I will check the Valve adjustment and start from scratch on timing the bike again.

Also I am using the motor from a 78 but the points set that came on the 77, the cam the dictates when the points fire is also from the 77 (as the 78 had EI) now is there anything different between the 78 and the 77 as to where that piece indexes on the crank?

The part you mention is the advancer, and are the same partfrom 77 and 78.

dissappointing as it definatly had electronic ignition on what I was told was a 78 engine....but it might be aftermarket, I say that because the wire colors dont match the colors on any of the wiring diagrams I have seen. it was something like 2 whites 1 pinkish and 1 black, Ill take some pictures tomorrow.

sounds like you have a dyna ignition which is a good thing much less problems than points once they are set properly they won't need anything else.

well thats good but now I will also need to find a wiring diagram and adapt it to my bike if possible

dyna tek has an excellent website and you can get installation and trouble shooting downloads from them for your specific ignition system just look up dynatek.com

Wasent a Dyna EI it started with a M but have forgotten the name now :S either way today was my last day of being able to work on it so I took it in to the shop. I feel defeated......

One question that I may have missed, but what jet sizes do you have? I ask this because I noticed the pods and didn't know if you had rejetted for this. My 650 did the same kind of behavior where I could use the choke as a throttle and later at low RPM's it would die. Just wanted to check.

its an old martek and they aren't in bussiness anymore you will if the ignition is the problem have to either get a points plate from someone or buy a dyna s which is what i would do the martek came out around the same time as your bike was hatched so it has given good service it's only about 30 years old. if you go with apoints plate you will probably need points and condensers as well so it will be just as cheap to go with the dyna system and easier to deal with as well.

Maybe it's a Martek. That's old school stuff, haven't heard of them in years.

Nice call timebomb, I put the points from the origional 77 motor in this motor same holds true for the stator, because I diddnt want to do a lot of messing with the electrical system....at least not yet
