Thanks guys. I know the carbs need a good cleaning but I'm not quite prepared to tackle that myself at the moment. I have used almost a full can of Seafoam and have the air screws at 1.5 out.

Perhaps allowing too much air and therefore excessively lean. Would screw in 1/4 turn to 1.25 out and re-test.

The pilot and enrichener circuits need cleaning. Mikuni VM series carbs are not particularly cold blooded... problem is, most folks who say this have never cleaned their carburetors properly or have modified something that causes them to be lean at start up.
