new member 81 kz750e four
19 Apr 2008 07:33
hello all I just obtained this bike for a very very good deal and now I am trying to get it up and going I got it to start on carb cleaner but when I stop spraying it it instantly dies. I pulled the carbs off and sprayed the bowls out, after I got it back together and turned the gas on though # 1 and 2 were leaking from the overflow. I checked the release screws and they were tight so I loosened them then it came a pourin out. Any help with this would be much appreciated, Thanks

Welcome to KSR! We're glad you're here!
dies - might be clogged pilot circuit.
leaking - might be float needle failing to seal in its seat.
Good Luck!

Like Patton says it migh be clogged jets and improperly seating float needle.
If the bike had been sitting for a while with gas in the carbs then you may have gum in various places and just taking the bowls off and spraying carb cleaner may not be enough to do the trick.
I'd suggest you take of the carbs, take off the bowls. take off the tops and check the rubber diaphragms, unscrew the jets, spray everything with carb cleaner. Make sure you wear safety glasses as this stuff will shoot back out some other hole and if it gets your eyes then not a good thing.
Make sure you can poke a nylon bristle or guitar string through every hole so you know all passageways are clear. Be careful if using wire/guitar string that you dont scratch any metal. Blow through everything with compressed air.
When you put everything back together again install an inline fuel filter between the gas tank and the carbs.
I guess what I'm saying is do a real thourough job and take your time. Worth it in the end. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

but if I dissassemble all of the carbs then won't I have to have them synced or whatever? Is there something I can do at home rather than taking it to the shop cuz I called and asked them and they wanted like 300 to sync the rack of carbs, they are keihin carbs if that matters. I took the top off of #1 and the diaphram looked good no cracks and the spring wasn't rusted at all. The float valve was sticking when I pulled them out to clean them the first time so I guess maybe I didn't get them clean enough. when I got this bike all the wiring was hanging out both sides so I had to get all the electrical good and kind of go from there, but finding this site makes me feel that its more promising talking with other KZers. Thanks again

so far all the gaskets looked good so I should be able to reuse them at least for the mean time (I'm kind of on a strict budget) but if I need to I can always hold out and get the rebuild kits for all four carbs. I was going to try and use a set of mikunis that my roomate has on his gs750 but the diameter was just a little off ( mikuni are bigger) thanks

Vacuum sync is the best way, but a plain old bench sync will generally get them close enough to work, and it's easy (and cheap).
I'd really like to see a poll as to how many here have actually vacuum synced the carbs on their bikes, vs the number of us that are riding after only a bench sync.
Clean the carbs thoroughly and you'll be much happier.

we got a lot in common... new here, deal on non running 81 kz 750 and no budget
Like someone mentioned above make sure all passages are open.
I used a straight pin to unplug what felt like cement from the pilot jet.

I have no clue how to sync either way I was just told something about having to do it. Is there special equipment I will have to get? Thanks and I will get pics up soon. I do need to find a seat with hardware, but the tail section has been cut on mine and a harley rear fender was put on and so I was thinking about putting a solo seat on but I am not quite sure how that would mount down yet.

You "really" don't want to go there
You'll open up a can of worms that you don't have the experience to deal with, then get frustrated. Just get the stock carbs working right.
A bench sync just requires a small piece of wire (I sometimes use a straightened paper clip) and a small screwdriver.
Take the carbs apart and completely clean them out, maybe even get a new set of float needle valves and bowl gaskets from Z1 Enterprises (I assume they are available), then bench sync the carbs. Or, if you have the $$$, send the carbs to Wiredgeorge (look for one of his posts and clink the link in his sig) and have them rebuilt, no muss, no fuss, your wallet will just be a few $$ lighter.

is there somewere that describes the process of syncing with that method? I really want to learn how to do as much as possible myself. When/if it breaks down on the road I would like to know how to fix it, ya know. Know how is the key to happiness......
