Re: Marketing A Tool
01 Jul 2026 08:55I always give them a "kiss" before installing the spring compressor which would still work in this scenario - also once installed I give the valve stem a sharp "kiss" to be sure they are seated (better they jump off on the bench than when it's runningHere's a unique take on a lapping tool Dave. Made this probably 20yrs years ago when doing those Honda 1979 and later 4 valve heads. The lapper kept sliding off those tiny valve heads/tulips. This way i could vacuum them in place and with flexible tubing to connect to a vacuum source still swivel and finish my task. Actually thought of refining it and shuffling the concept to prosperity but was waay too busy at the time raising children/construction which took all my time to complete. A multi-use tool though, not constrained to a particular Make/Model. That makes All The Difference for production and acceptance. Still use it occasionally, just another tool in the box. The Only flaw i can see in your concept is the Often initial "smack" required to set loose the half keepers from the keeper. They are often bound but i suppose the way you designed your tool you could just put pressure on one side to break that "memory". I truly wish You success!!

Oh be generous in Your "Kiss" Wookie! I've lightly licked many a lapping sticks haha. Don't take that to the gutter mindset but can't blame one if they would Hehe. Too much slobber and they slide, too little and pointless. But if lapping, cup slides off a convex tulip it immediately pulls back the grinding compound, rendering it impracticable to get suction. Surfaces of those little valves above the dip/convex are never perfectly smooth resulting in loss of ability to complete a simple lapping. Thus the creation id never taken further. Have used the double sided can of Briggs and Stratton Fine and Course for years as grinding compound. Aways used a straight donor valve for doing the Hondas seats because of the face coating applied to the oem valves. Wish i'd not used up all my frequent flier miles otherwise i'd take a European Vacation to come across the pond and hang out with You Wookie and Joe!! We would have a Blast and re-hash ole days!

Until then, still stuck in Kansas doing Farm fella stuff. Soo far to have tires mounted, gotta be reliant on one's own. Break the bead successfully with one's old all wheel drive Ford. Sounds like a midwestern hick
song but country boys do survive hehe.

There’s nearly always a way if you “think outside the box” Clay (not always popular with the H&S boys!!!!)

Re: Marketing A Tool
01 Jul 2026 14:06 - 01 Jul 2026 14:23Excellent in its simplicity!
Have you considered thread durability re: aluminum as material? We can see a shop using that tool to expedite seal replacement. Many, many repetitions of use in a commercial shop environment may tax the wear strength of threads in aluminum past their expected lifespan.
A hobbyist / restoration enthusiast working in their home shop may never have delved that deep into a head. That person may be attempting a one-off project on the head. What method / advice would you include with the tool to keep a valve from dropping into the cylinder when the keepers are removed?

Nice compliment...
I thought early-on that thread reinforcement would be wise, but much of the spring compression can be accomplished easily with two fingers.
That said, Time Serts may be an unnecessary expense, though further testing and design modification would certainly be forthcoming.
😃
Though I used the string method for a single valve retention, compressed air would be superior, and would be ideal for a multi-valve version of the tool, so the whole row of intake/exhaust valves could potentially be addressed with one tool setup.
🤔
