My KZ1000 came with a 4 into 1 header, I have no idea what brand it is. Well the thing had no baffles in it.
I like the sound of it wide open, but for daily commuting, the noise can be annoying.
I was going to make a baffle for it out of some sheetmetal and exhaust pipe, but I was tooling around the local farm and home supply when I spotted a tractor muffler that looked like it would slip inside my header.
Paid $17 bucks for it and took it home. It slipped right into my header almost like it was meant to be there. I drove a screw into the side of it to hold it in the header, and took it for a ride. It was actually too quiet, and the back pressure was too much for my motor. Caused some missing and sputtering at wide open throttle. I took a look inside the muffler and discovered a partition inside the forces all of the exhaust gas from the inner tube into the outer tube, then back into the inner tube. I sharpened up a piece of rebar and hammered it through the partition a couple times. Reinstalled it, and now it runs fine, and actually sounds pretty good without being obnoxious. I also cut both nipples off the ends of it.

Where's the flapper cap?! It'd be more fun with the flapper  .

That definitely looks great. Methinks I may have to take a trip to Tractor Supply. I've got the exact same story, just change the bike to KZ550.

 Flapper cap! That's funny. Some of my Harley biker buds teased me a little, saying I should put John Deere stickers on the tank.:pinch:
My little town, Grafton Illinois, is a biker haven on the weekends (weather permitting). Thousands of bikes of all kinds show up on the weekends. A lot of them run straight pipes, so I take the muffler out on the weekends, but put it back in for going to work. I leave for work at 4am, and the neighbors have a cow if I start up my bike in the morning without the muffler. But on the weekends it's a different story.

I just love seeing threads like this one on this site. There are a lot of old bikes out there that qualify as "borderline", by that I mean too nice to be a parts bike, but not nice enough to warrant spending huge amounts of cash to restore to original condition. It is tips like this one that can possibly convince someone to turn a junk KZ into a viable daily rider without spending a fortune.

I bought an 81 550 Ltd this spring, needed the usual, carb clean, new battery etc. Being that it was 25 yrs old, the boots from the carbs to the airbox were hardened and therefore junk, so my choices were either new boots cost= $40 or pods also $40 or get creative. I chose to get creative and for a cost of about $3.00 came up with the following fix.

What I did was cut up a Scotchbrite pad and used the stock springs to hold them on the carbs. Not real pretty, but cheap and effective. Rode it all summer like this, still not convinced that pods would work any better.
