Hey gang.

I am at my wits end. Spent the whole day in the garage today trying to get my 650 fired up as we have a few nice riding days coming this week. But instead of it firing I am ready to set it on fire:)

It was barely running a few weeks ago, weak spark, so I bought a new battery. The bike has Dyna coils, Dyna electronic ignition.

Had it running a couple of nights ago on 3, intermittently on 4. Decided to pull the carbs and soak them just in case I had a blockage.

Soaked the carbs last night and went through them thoroughly.

Put them back on the bike tonight and checked the plugs for spark. Good spark but the thing still won't fire. Checked all electrical connections and nothing seemed to be a problem.

Released the bolt on the cam chain tightener and tightened it again. Sounds great when the starter is cranking, no major cam chain slapping.

New clear fuel line and I can see the gas is getting to the carbs but I can't verify that the gas is getting to the cylinders.

It still won't fire. I can't even get the thing to fire on one cylinder.

What sort of solution should I be looking for?

Any guesses?

Sorry to hear Colin. Must be that white stuff on the ground Monday telling you something.:pinch:

Are your plugs wet with gas when you pull them out?
Did you stuff a rag in your air cleaner opening (for storage)? Or are you running pods? Can't rememeber.

Hey Rob. I gonna head out to the garage later and take another looksee, but I believe the plugs were bone dry when I checked them earlier, which tells me I might not be getting the fuel through the carbs. BTW I am running velocity stacks.

Thanks-Colin Firth

Checked the ignition timing last week and it was dead on. I guess there is the possibility the cam chain could've jumped a couple of teeth. I took a look through the spark plug opening and saw the pistons moving up and down freely.

Colin...try spraying some WD40 into the carbs,while You're turning it over,Bud.
If You ARE getting spark and it won't fire...try that and see.Maybe You're pilot circuit is goofy?
I did this when I was having probs with My 29 smoothies, and using the WD40 helped Me realize that I had 1 carb that was not getting fuel in the pilot circuit.B)

Pods or factory airbox,btw?

Thanks Sandy. I gave it a try and no luck. Sprayed WD40 in through the velocity stacks in #1 and #4. Still comatose . I checked the float bowls in carbs 1 and 4 and they are getting fuel.

I am now leaning towards the cam chain maybe having jumped a couple of links. When I loosened the cam chain adjuster I followed the mechanic's manual and set it with the 1/4 ignition marks at TDC.

I'll pull the tank (again) and the valve cover tomorrow to check the cam chain pin count. Sure hope it didn't bend a valve if the chain decided to find another home on the wrong links:(

Any other ideas gang???

if you bent some valves wouldnt it turn over a bit harder? (hopefully it still feels normal)
did you try any starting fluid or just the WD40? if it starts for a few seconds with a good shot of ether, I would think that the pilot system is plugged. it would just be getting big shots of gas from the mains when/if you cracked the throttle any(possibly fouling the plugs?)

At te risk of sounding foolish, do you have the plug wires on the correct plugs? or the coils connected to the correct wire?

just a thought before you get in up to your elbows.
