clutch will not engage! HELP
21 Oct 2006 19:46
1978 kz 650b. I took off the cover to take the chain and sprocket off, I cam back and put it back togeather just how i thout it went. But after the reassemble the clutch does not engage, i mean i can pull the lever and it pops back but the bike will not let the tire move in gear. I have made sure that the cable isn stuck or anything. I think it has something to do with the long rod that hooks into were the clutch cable is the rod that goes into the pully. THanks this is my last step and i can take my bike for a ride. :woohoo:

You have to make sure that the gear on the inside of the cover didn't get shifted(turned)when You took it off.
I'm not too sure on the 650,but it's pretty much the same as the bigger bikes. It rides on a worm-gear,and it pushes inwards when the clutch lever is pulled, but if You shifted that gear without knowing, then it may be sitting in the wrong position(too far out),causing the clutch to not engage.
Did You remove the cable from the cover by any chance?

Do You have a manual for Your bike?
Ok...if You DID remove the cable from the cover(You didn't have to just to remove the cover)...You might not have put it back properly.
On the end of the cable(cover end),it needs to pop back into an opening in the cover.Sometimes the cable will snag the outter edge of that opening...take a look at it before You pull the cover off again, but You will more than likely have to pull the cover anyway, but just do a visual first, and reply with what You've found...
Also...there's a spring that goes on the end of the cable...don't forget to install that where it's supposed to go.

Hmmm...pretty sure it's going to be that worm-gear.I can't see anything snagging the push rod,and pushing it in.
How is the cable adjustment?
Is the lever extended out all the way,or is it full of play?
If the cable adjustment IS fine, then You're going to have to pull that cover again...

What about Your clutch adjuster on the engine case?(set-screw with a lock-nut)
Have You looked into that?
Did You play with that,at all, during any of this?
