Rings

Is it possible for the rings to loose compression but show no signs of wear. The 77 1000kz I bought in the spring was supposed to have only 16000 miles on it but I had to redo the valves. I thought the rings were ok, but, when I put it all back together found I still had no compression. I did the oil check and sure enough the rings are gone but the cylinder walls and pistons and rings still look ok.

square up ring in the bore by itself and measure end gap.
